On May 16, 2013, the United States Senate Judiciary Committee continued to markup S. 774, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. This markup focused primarily on Title III of the legislation, which deals with interior enforcement programs, such as E-Verify. The Committee considered 20 amendments on this day, with 10 being approved.
Among the amendments adopted by the Committee was a proposal by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) to expand and make permanent the EB-5 foreign investor program.
Among the amendments rejected by the Committee were proposals by Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) to move up the deadline for employers to implement E-Verify to 18 months, and to increase the penalties for using false government-issued identification for individuals seeking jobs.
Through three markups, 81 amendments have been considered, with 46 being passed by the Committee. The next markup is scheduled for Monday, May 20.
